Gout is one of the most painful medical conditions you get get. Ask any Gout sufferer. Gout is caused by excess Uric Acid in the blood stream. The uric acid chrystalises and these uric acid crystal are needle shaped. They tend to settle in the gaps between the joints in the food, notably the big toe joint is favourite. Gout is the inflammation caused by these uric acid chrystals.

Gout is a medical condition and should be treated by a doctor, the remedies I've found are what worked for me. You should always seek medical advice (Disclaimer - I'm not a doctor, nothing here is medical advice, just what works for me).

Gout The links lower down the page provide some excellent gout remedies and tips for gout relief. I'll summarise the tips that worked for me.

Gout and Alcohol - avoid drinking alcohol during weekdays, and watch out for drinks that agravate gout if you drink at weekends. Personally, I now avoid red wine and lager. Cider seems to have a positive effect.

Purines and Gout - Uric Acid is a bi-product from metabolising purines. (Purines are natural substances found in all of the body's cells, and in virtually all foods, but a small number of foods contain concentrated amounts of purines). Therefore avoiding foods that are high in purine is sensible to prevent and relieve gout. High Purine foods to avoid include Beef, Pork, Bacon, Lamb, Seafood, any food that is made with a significant amount of yeast such as beer and bread, and alcohol.

Gout and Water - There seems to be a very strong relationship between being dehydated and a gout attacks in those prone to gout. Drink 2 to 3 litres of water every day and the uric acid will not build up and stays very diluted.

Gout and Cherry Juice - After reading so much about the positive effect of Cherries, I looked for the best source in the UK. Cherrygood is the one that works for me, available in Asda and Tesco. I'm happy to recommend this to anyone.

Gout and Bi-carbonate of Soda - I'll repeat the warnings from other websites. Whilst this does seem to work extremely well, the high sodium content can be very bad for you. Bicarbonate of Soda works because it's alkaline and therefore neutralises uric acid. Allegedly a taking a teaspoon of Bicarbonate of Soda every day for a few days can completely neutralise the uric acid build up, and this is enough to keep you gout free for months.

Gout and Weight - most gout sufferers are male and overweight. Fact. Rapid weight loss can also trigger a gout attack. So the solution is a very sensible diet and excercise regime to very gradually lose weight.
Bupa health information factsheet - advice on gout and its symptoms, causes and treatment, plus prevention through diet Bupa health information factsheet - advice on gout and its symptoms, causes and treatment, plus prevention through diet. This Bupa page clearly explains the causes of gout and likely treatments.
Cherries and Gout Many people have found that eating cherries and drinking cherry juice has had a remarkable effect on gout. A chemical inside the cherry reduces uric acid in the blood, and also acts to reduce inflammation in gout. The Gout Aware Website explains more about the power of cherries as a gout cure.
Cherries and Gout The CherryGood website says that cherries have been shown to lower levels of uric acid in the blood, which is one of the most common causes of gout pain. A serving of cherries or cherry juice daily can significantly lower blood uric acid levels.
