The biggest mistake a beginner can make with an aquarium relates to feeding. Your fish will always appear to be hungry, no matter how much you feed them. Only ever feed them just enough food that they completely eat everything within 1 to 2 minutes. Only feed fish once or twice a day. Fish can easily go without being fed for 2 to 3 days. Over feeding will result in excess food polluting the water, and fish producing more waste.
Some fish have very different feeding habits to others in a community tank, ensure you offer something for all.
Live foods should be offered occsionally, as should frozen live foods, especially if you want to encourage breeding.
What to Feed
A good flake food such as supplied by Tetra Fish Foods will form the basis of your fishes diet. You should also feed a sinking algae wafer or two if you have bottom feeders such as plec, corydora and loaches.
Great Aquarium Fish Food Offers
Your local fish shop will have a great supply of fish food. A basic good quality flake will ensure all round health, but a good fish shop will also stock live food such as blood worm, artemis, and daphnia. Some of these live foods can be cultured at home. Ebay is a good source for obtaining live food.
