Beginners Guide to Tropical Fish

Getting Started Keeping Tropical Fish

img Firstly, assess what space you have, and what budget. If this is your first ever aquarium purchase, my personal recommendation is to go for a 3 feet wide community tank. This will really add to any room. When you buy, consider what accessories you'll need before you start. See the equipment section of this website.

The equipment you'll need can be sourced on the equipment page of this website. Basically you'll need in addition to the aquarium:- A heater, a filter, Lighting, gravel, and plants. You may also wish to consider CO2 injuction, and under gravel heating fir ultimate plant growth.

I have a Juwel Vision 180 as my main aquarium, but keep several breeding projects on the go in smaller tanks. I've managed to breed Endlers Livebearers, Guppies, Swordtails, Danios and Kribensis. Current projects include Tetras and Barbs.

One fact that will keep you successful.....

If you always believe your role is to keep the water, not the fish, you will succeed. If your water quality stays within certain parameters, you will undoubtedly have healthy fish. But if you ignore the nitrogen cycle, your fish health will be forever poor.

The fish you keep have all been bred. Some in the wild, some in huge fish farms in the far east, some in dealers tanks, and some in the tanks of hobbiests. All fish will breed in the right conditions, the challenge is to create these, i.e emulate nature.
