English rock band Viola Beach were an indie group, from Warrington. Formed in 2013, the band's final lineup was Kris Leonard (guitar and vocals), River Reeves (guitar), Tomas Lowe (bass guitar), and Jack Dakin (drums).
Viola Beach had played at the Where's the Music? festival in Norrköping, Sweden on Friday 12th February.
On Saturday 13th February 2016, whilst making their way back to the airport in a hired Nissan Qashqai, the four band members and their manager, Craig Tarry, were killed in an incident on the E4 motorway bridge at Södertälje, southwest of Stockholm, Sweden.
The bridge was open to allow a boat to pass. Their vehicle struck the raised bridge before plunging into the water with no survivors.
The Music of Viola Beach
In 2015 Viola Beach were starting to get noticed in a big way. Many described them as brilliant when they played sets on the BBC Introducing stage and both Reading and Leeds Festivals.
In September 2015, their single 'Swings and Waterslides' was included in the Radio 1 playlist. This was followed by a debut Maida Vale session, which was broadcast on Huw Stephens' Radio 1 show in November 2015.
The music of Viola Beach lives on. Coldplay performed 'Boys That Sing' at Glastonbury, using footage of the band.
Chris Martin told the audience "We're on tour right now, and normally what we do at this point in our concert is play Heroes by David Bowie, and it's great - the song, not the version.
"But what we're going to do tonight is something a little different ... this year in the beginning of the year, maybe you read about a beautiful young band called Viola Beach, a band that just got signed and were on their first tour of the world and were in a tragic accident and they got taken away and we as a band thought that was just the worst.
"It just reminded us of us and all the other bands that come through here, the excitement and the joy and the hope and we really felt that in them.
"And so we decided as a band, instead of playing Heroes tonight, we're going to create Viola Beach's alternate future for them and let them headline Glastonbury with their song.
"So Kris and Jack and River and Tomas and their manager Craig, this is what would have maybe been you in 20 years or so and I hope we do this song justice."

Boys That Sing
A statement from the band’s families said: “We are tremendously proud of everything the boys achieved in such a short space of time. Craig, Jack, Kris, River and Tom shared a huge passion, talent and dedication to music. We believe the best way to celebrate our sons’ lives is to release an album of their songs.
“This is their legacy and we know deep in our hearts that the boys would want the world to listen to the music they poured everything into. This was only the beginning for them and these nine songs were written with every intention to be shared, heard and most of all, enjoyed.
“We hope that it brings you as much happiness listening to it as we know it did to them making it.”
