Joe McElderry has been named X Factor Winner 2009 after going head-to-head against 26-year-old Olly Murs, in the final on Sunday 13th December 2009.
18-year-old Joe from South Shields was victorious in the competition after many months of his hard work in the auditions and his nerve-wracking live performances.
Joe McElderry was overcome with emotion as he spoke to host Dermot O'Leary: "I can't even speak, thank you so much everyone." Proud Cheryl said: “I feel over the moon I’m absolutely delighted. The right person won. Joe I’m so proud of you. The north east are going to go nuts.” Simon Cowell added “I’m gutted for Olly, I’m thrilled for you because you are brilliant.”
